Named the seventh third base coach in Rays history last Nov 21, replacing Matt Quatraro who had been named bench coach…follows Greg Riddoch (1998-99), Billy Hatcher (2000-01), Terry Collins (2001), Tom Foley (2002-14), Charlie Montoyo (2015-17) and Quatraro (2018) ... Prior to joining the Rays, he spent 21 years in the Astros organization, including the last 12 as a manager…compiled a 761-694 (.523) record managing Triple-A Fresno (2018), Double-A Corpus Christi (2015-17), Class-A Lancaster (2012-14), Class-A Lexington (2010-11) and Rookie-level Greenville (2007-09)...managed José Altuve, Carlos Correa, Alex Bregman, J.D. Martínez and many other future big leaguers ... In 2018, managed Fresno to an 82-57 (.590) record, winning the Pacific Coast League North Division title…named the PCL's Best Manager Prospect by Baseball America ... Guided his teams to the postseason in six of the past seven seasons…led Corpus Christi to the two winningest seasons in franchise history (2015-16) and was named Texas League Manager of the Year in 2015…won a pair of California League championships (2012, 2014) and was named the league's Manager of the Year in 2012 ... Has been involved with the Dominican Winter League for the past 13 seasons, including as a manager for Águilas Cibaeñas (2018), Gigantes del Cibao (2017) and Estrellas de Oriente (2016) ... Began his coaching career in 1999 as a coach and scout for the Astros Dominican Republic operations and remained in that role through the 2004 season…served as the hitting coach at Lexington from 2005-06.


Former infielder was originally signed by the Tigers in 1997 and spent parts of two seasons in the minors in the Tigers and Astros (1998) systems.


His father, Julio Linares, is the Astros senior advisor for Latin American development and has been part of the organization since 1973 ... Has two sons, Steven (18) and Ryan (13).
