After dropping the first two games at Wrigley Field, the Giants mounted a momentous comeback in an epic, 6-5 win in Game 3 that took 13 innings. With momentum on their side -- and on the heels of eight outstanding innings from non-waiver Trade Deadline acquisition Matt Moore -- San Francisco seemed on the cusp of forcing a rubber game back in Chicago.
However, the Cubs capitalized on the Giants' bullpen, overcoming a three-run deficit with four in the ninth to earn a 6-5 victory in the series-deciding Game 4. The Cubs’ win snapped the Giants’ streak of three consecutive World Series championships in even-numbered years.
"Any time you can survive like that against an October giant like that -- it's hard to finish any team in the postseason, let alone a team with that kind of character and pedigree," Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said.
