Path to the NLDS: St. Louis (90-72) won the NL Central by two games; Los Angeles (94-68) won the NL West by six games
It's hard to find a series more closely-decided than this one, with three games decided one run and the fourth decided by two.
A huge deciding factor was NL MVP and Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw getting hit hard twice in the series, taking losses in Game 1 and Game 4 and finishing the Division Series with a 7.82 ERA in 12 2/3 innings. Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright didn't fare much better, surrendering six earned runs on 11 hits in his one start (4 1/3 innings).
Offensively, St. Louis' Matt Carpenter was a Dodgers killer, with a 6-for-16 series that featured three doubles, three home runs and seven RBIs.
