Path to the NLDS: Kansas City (89-73) beat Oakland, 9-8, in the AL Wild Card Game; Anaheim (98-64) won the AL West by 10 games
After requiring extra innings to topple the A's in the AL Wild Card Game, the Royals' tired legs didn't catch a break in the ALDS against the Angels. It turned out they didn't need one. Games 1 and 2 went to extras in Anaheim, but the vaunted Kansas City bullpen lived up to its billing. The Royals then jumped out early in Game 3 and held on for a five-run victory.
Eric Hosmer went 4-for-10 with two homers and four RBIs in the series for Kansas City, while Erick Aybar and Kole Calhoun each had five hits for the Angels.
No one on the Royals' pitching staff finished the series with an ERA above 3.00, while rookie Yordano Ventura (seven innings of one-run ball in Game 2) and Greg Holland (two saves and six strikeouts in three one-inning appearances) shined for Kansas City.
