Path to the ALDS: Detroit (93-69) won the AL Central by one game; Oakland (96-66) won the AL West by 5 1/2 games.
This was a back-and-forth battle all the way through, with Justin Verlander turning in a dominant series performance and clinching it in Game 5 for Detroit.
Verlander also led the Tigers to a Game 2 victory, and finished the series with six hits allowed over 15 scoreless innings in two starts. Sonny Gray also made two starts for Oakland, scattering three earned runs over 13 innings.
Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes and Coco Crisp combined for 15 hits, seven runs and six RBIs in the five games, while Detroit's Victor Martinez went 9-for-20 with a homer and two RBIs.
