Path to the ALCS ALDS:Boston over Tampa Bay (3 games to 1); Detroit over Oakland (3 games to 2)
The Tigers' pitching staff simply couldn't hold up to Boston's, as every Detroit pitcher who appeared in the series gave up a run. Boston, meanwhile, had six relievers -- including closer and ALCS MVP Koji Uehara -- go the entire series without giving up a run (those six combined for 18 1/3 innings).
Uehara saved two one-run Boston victories and the 5-2 clincher in Game 6.
Overall, four of the games were decided by one run, while Game 4 was a four-run Tigers win and Game 6 was a three-run Boston win.
In Games 2, 3 and 6, Boston's winning runs came in the seventh inning or later, while Detroit was held scoreless in those frames.
Jacoby Ellsbury led the Red Sox with seven hits, while Shane Victorino drove in five runs. Victor Martinez had a series-high eight hits for Detroit.
