Path to the NLDS: Washington (98-64) won the NL East by four games; St. Louis (88-74) beat Atlanta, 6-3, in the NL Wild Card Game
Washington's return to postseason baseball was not short on drama. The Nationals took on a playoff regular in the Cardinals, and a dramatic Game 5 victory helped St. Louis advance to the NLCS in front of a shocked Washington crowd.
The Nationals took a tight one in Game 1 before St. Louis bounced back to take Games 2 and 3. Jayson Werth then delivered a walk-off solo homer in Game 4 in Washington to send the series to a decisive fifth game.
Washington had St. Louis on the ropes in the top of the ninth, as Nationals closer Drew Storen had two outs on the Cardinals before Daniel Descalso delivered a two-run single to tie the game. One batter later, Storen had Pete Kozma down to the last strike before Kozma singled in two more runs to break the Nats' back.
