Christian Israel Arroyo Bio Info

Christian grew up a Devil Rays fan and was born two months after Tampa Bay was awarded a franchise in March 1995…Rocco Baldelli was his favorite player, and he often proudly sported a green Baldelli jersey…before he learned of being traded to Tampa Bay, his agent had arranged for the two to meet over lunch during the offseason... His mother raised him alone from age 2-12 and could be considered his first hitting coach…she read Ted Williams' The Science of Hitting and attended local hitting clinics, using that knowledge to teach Christian…she even threw him batting practice while eight months pregnant in preparation for U.S. National Team tryouts... While with the Giants, Matt Duffy provided Christian with instruction and advice in the minor leagues and at spring training…Arroyo credits him with helping ease his transition from shortstop to third base... Christian singled off Clayton Kershaw for his first career hit…the achievement didn't sink in until he received the ball after the game and saw Kershaw's name written on it.... In 2011, his Hernando High School team reached the state semifinals but lost to a Jesuit High School squad led by Lance McCullers…the highlight of his weekend was watching José Fernández pitch for Alonso High School as a senior... His other local interests include charter fishing in New Port Richey and cheering on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tampa Bay Lightning.

2017

Made his major league debut for the Giants on April 24 vs. LAD at 21 years, 239 days…was the first Giant to start in his debut before his 22nd birthday since Madison Bumgarner in 2009 and the first position player since Royce Clayton in 1991…he became the youngest player to start at third base for the Giants since Matt Williams in 1987... Became the first player drafted out of high school in the 2013 June Draft class to debut, one day before LAD Cody Bellinger... Appeared in 34 games and made 32 starts (21- 3B, 9-SS, 2-2B) for the Giants…recorded his first career hit on April 25 vs. LAD, a single off threetime Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw... On April 26 vs. LAD, connected for his first career home run, a 2-run shot off Sergio Romo... Also homered on April 28 vs. SD and on May 5 at CIN…the latter came off 40-year-old Bronson Arroyo, who-though unrelated-attended the same high school and graduated one month after Christian was born... Selected to the major league roster after batting .439/.471/.682 (29-for-66) through 17 games with Triple-A Sacramento.... Optioned back to Sacramento on June 4…on June 14, sustained a left wrist contusion when he was hit on the hand by a pitch and landed on the disabled list the next day…on July 1, in his first game after returning, was hit again and his broken left hand ended his season…underwent surgery on July 10... Re-aggravated his hand injury taking a ground ball off his glove hand for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League… underwent surgery to insert a pin into his left hand on Nov 3…he is expected to recover in time for Opening Day... Prior to the trade, was ranked by MLB.com as the No. 1 prospect in the Giants system…ranked by Baseball America as the Giants No. 4 prospect and the organization's Best Hitter for Average… after the trade, was ranked by MLB.com as the No. 6 prospect in the Rays system and the No. 5 third base prospect in baseball.

2016

Highly regarded Giants prospect spent all of 2016 with double-A Richmond, batting .274 (130-for- 474) with 36 doubles, three home runs and 49 RBI in 119 games...Was third among Eastern League leaders in doubles (36)...Was selected to the EL mid-season All-Star team...Invited to Giants' big league camp for the first time in his career.
