The Reds claimed utility infielder/outfielder Patrick Kivlehan off waivers from the Padres on Wednesday. To make room on the 40-man roster, shortstop Zack Cozart was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Patrick Anthony Kivlehan…graduated from St. Joseph's (NY) High School in June 2008…graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ in 2012…played four seasons of football before playing baseball senior season… named 2012 Big East Player of the Year after earning the first Triple Crown in league history…overall in his lone year on the diamond, batted .399/.484/.710 with 14 HR and 50 RBI.

2015

Made his Class AAA debut and spent the season with Tacoma, batting .256 (121-472) with 25 doubles, 22 HR, and 73 RBI over 123 games…was among PCL's top 20 in total bases (14th, 214), RBI (16th), and XBH (T18th, 48)…hit for higher average against left-handed pitching (.262 vs. .254), but had higher SLG (.477 / .403) and OPS (.787 / .722) figures off right-handers…hit .237 (69-291) with .728 OPS before the All-Star break, then .287 (52-181) with .827 OPS after the break… in his final 19 G beginning Aug. 20, compiled .392/.422/.696/1.118 (31-79) slash line.

Split season between Class A Clinton (April 4-June 19) and High Desert (June 20-Sept. 1), combining to hit .303/.366/.464/.830 (148-489) over 128 games in his first full pro season…had 25-game hit streak, July 25-Aug. 22 (.437, 45-103, 7 HR, 35 RBI), longest hit streak both by Mariners' farmhand and in Cal League in 2013…on Aug. 9 vs. Lancaster, went 5-for-7 with 4 R, a 2B, HR, and 6 RBI…his 38 RBI in 27 G in August led all minor league players, also the highest total by any player in any month in 2013…played for Peoria Javelinas in Arizona Fall League.
