Graduated from Lincoln-Way East H.S. (Ill.) in 2009. Played three seasons at Central Michigan (2010-12)…as a freshman in 2010, earn Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America and First-Team All-MAC, and was named MAC "Freshman of the Year" after going 7-0 with a 2.12 ERA (59.1IP, 34H, 25R/14ER, 27BB, 64K) in 20 appearances (two starts)…was named to the 2011 Cape Cod League All-Star Team.

Went 14-4 with one save and a 1.73 ERA (135.0IP, 102H, 28R/26ER, 56BB, 124K, 6HR) in 26 games (22 starts) between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre…tied for the organizational lead and tied for fourth among all minor league pitchers in wins…ranked second among minor league pitchers in ERA (min. 125.0IP) and fifth among Yankees farmhands in strikeouts…held opponents to a .215 BA (102-for-475); LH .205 (26-for-127), RH .218 (76-for-348)…in his 22 starts, his team went 18-4…logged 10 scoreless starts…went 7-0 with a 0.94 ERA (67.1IP, 7ER) in 13 home games (11 starts).
