Tribe adds Mejia to 40-man, claims 2 off waivers

The Indians have a fair share of decisions to make on their Major League roster as they prepare to defend their American League pennant. Before that, they made some key decisions Friday, adding slick-hitting catcher Francisco Mejia to their 40-man roster while claiming left-handed pitchers Edwin Escobar and Tim Cooney off waivers.

Cooney throws 25 pitches

Following a second setback from arm soreness, Cardinals lefty Tim Cooney returned to the mound Wednesday to throw a 25-pitch live batting practice session and is expected to pitch in Grapefruit League play Saturday.

Played college baseball at Wake Forest University...earned 2nd team All-ACC honors his sophomore season (2011), the first Demon Deacon since 2007 to win all-conference honors...three-time ACC Pitcher of the Week...played high school baseball at Malvern Prep (Pa.) compiling a 25-6 record in his career...helped the school to a PIAA State Championship in 2009 and a 40-3 record and National Ranking in 2008...resides in Collegeville, Pa.

Made his Major League debut in a season in which he pitched mostly at Triple-A Memphis…Named to the Pacific Coast League All Star team, but was unable to participate due to his promotion to the majors…Began the season at Memphis and was purchased on 4/30, making his Major League debut vs. PHI. Threw 2.1 innings and allowed three runs in the start.
