The Cubs sold the contract of right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton to the Yokohama BayStars team in Japan.

The Cubs recalled infielder Tommy La Stella from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, and he was in the starting lineup for the series finale against the Pirates, playing second base and batting seventh.

Spencer Patton, a native of Urbana, Ill., was acquired by Chicago in November of 2015 from Texas for infielder Frandy De La Rosa ... Spencer broke into the majors with the Rangers in 2014 and went 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA (1 ER/9.1 IP) in nine relief appearances before splitting 2015 between the Rangers and Triple-A Round Rock. Is 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA (25 ER/33.1 IP) in 36 career major league relief appearances the last two seasons, averaging more than one strikeout per inning with 36 strikeouts in 33.1 frames. Owns a 15-14 record with 33 saves and a 3.49 ERA (104 ER/268.1 IP) in 147 career minor league outings, all but 12 in relief, covering five seasons ... has struck out 364 batters in 268.1 innings, an average of 12.2 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. Named a 2014 mid-season Pacific Coast League All-Star. Selected by Kansas City in the 24th round of the 2011 Draft out of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville ... was acquired by Texas for righthander Jason Frasor, July 16, 2014. Pitched three seasons at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a record of 13-10 in 36 games (30 starts) ... his 109 strikeouts were second-most in school history while his 13 wins ranked third. Was recalled to Texas, May 4, and appeared in two games (3 ER/3.0 IP) before he was optioned back to Round Rock, May 14 ... was up again with the big league club, June 7-11 and June 25-August 27. Had a 3.21 ERA (5 ER/14.0 IP) in 13 road games ... posted a 17.10 ERA (19 ER/10.0 IP) in 14 outings at Globe Life Park. Opponents had a .143 average (6-for-42) with none on base ... had a .360 average (9-for-25) with runners in scoring position. Combined to go 5-4, 3.90 (27 ER/62.1 IP) with 18 saves in 49 relief appearances in the Pacific Coast League for Omaha and Round Rock...finished the game in 40 of his 49 outings...averaged 12.3 strikeouts-per-9-innings and compiled a 1.075 WHIP...opponents hit just .188 (42-223)...went 4-3, 4.08 (21 ER/46.1 IP) with 14 saves in 34 games with Omaha before 7/16 trade to Texas...after being traded earlier in the day, pitched in the Triple-A All-Star Game in Durham, fanning only batter faced...including final 3 games with Omaha, allowed just one run over 17.2 IP spanning 15 appearances from 7/7-8/23 (3 BB/28 SO)...was 1-1, 3.38 (6 ER/16.0 IP) in 15 outings with Round Rock, just one HR allowed...recorded more than 3 outs just twice for Round Rock, but did it 18 times for Omaha.

2013

Posted career lows with 1.020 WHIP and 1.86 ERA (17 ER/82.1 IP) over 37 games/2 starts for Wilmington (High-A) and NW Arkansas (AA)...opponents hit .201 (58-289)...allowed 2 runs in his Double-A debut on 7/27 at Springfield, but permitted just 2 R/1 ER in final 11 outings and 17.0 innings to finish the season...pitched for Los Mochis in the Mexican Winter League, going 2-1 with 10 saves and a 0.72 ERA (2 ER/25.0 IP) over 20 relief outings...last 11 outings in winter ball: 14.1 IP, 0 R, opponents 3-for-45 (.067).
