Right-hander Erik Johnson looks as if he'll get the first chance to replace Jeff Samardzija in the 2016 White Sox starting rotation, based on comments from general manager Rick Hahn during Wednesday's conference call to announce the free agent catching addition of Alex Avila.

Single … attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he went 7-4 with a 2.83 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 18 starts as a junior … helped lead the Bears to a berth in the 2011 College World Series … earned honorable mention All Pac-10 honors in 2010 … played in the Northwoods League in 2009 and was named the sixth-best prospect by Baseball America … is a 2008 graduate of Los Altos (Calif.)
