Jose Julio Ruiz Barzan. 2010 Signed a major league deal with Tampa Bay on July 26 and was assigned to club's Dominican Summer League entry...batted .447 (21-47) with one home run, 7 doubles, and 9 RBI in 13 games in the DSL...hit safely in 12 of 13, reaching safely via hit or walk in all 13...had .527 on-base pct. and .702 slugging mark for a 1.229 OPS...promoted to Montgomery (AA) on Aug. 12 and batted .272 (25-92) with a home run and 11 RBI in 23 Double-A, hit .156 (7-45) in first 11 games with one extra-base hit and 4 final 12 contests beginning Aug. 25, hit .383 (18-47) with a double, triple, homer, and 7 RBI...played primarily first base and DH, but also appeared in 2 games in left field...was released from Tampa Bay's 40-man roster on November 19 and given his unconditional release on November 23. 2009 Defected from Cuba in the summer of 2009 after playing for Cuba in the National Series, the highest level of baseball in that country...before leaving Cuba, Ruiz was batting .305 with a .408 on-base percentage and a .467 slugging percentage through 52 games for his National Series club.
