Perez concussion test holds up final roster

Indians manager Terry Francona announced during Sunday's workout that catcher Roberto Perez was going through Major League Baseball's concussion protocol after taking a foul tip off his mask during Saturday's exhibition game in Texas. As a result, Cleveland is in a holding pattern when it comes to the final look of its Opening Day alignment.

Full name ZACHARY BUTLER WALTERS...Played college ball at the University of San Diego (was a Toreros teammate with Washington LHP Sammy Solis)...Batted .314 in 3 seasons at USD and led the Toreros with a .377 batting average as a sophomore... Graduated from and earned 4 baseball letters at Cimarron Memorial (NV) High in Las Vegas...Twice earned first-team All-State honors...As a junior, won '06 Sunset Division batting title (.549)...In the offseason enjoys hiking and working on cars...Lived in Bozeman, Montana from age 2-14...2015 TribeFest participant.


Began the year on the 15-day disabled list after suffering oblique strain in spring training...Was activated and optioned to AAA Columbus on April 24 and spent most of the regular season in AAA Columbus around three stints in Cleveland (May 8-19, June 9-16, August 11-14)...At the Major League level he appeared in 4 games in left field, 2 games each at short/third/second, respectively...In Columbus he appeared in 37 games in left field, 24 games at third base, 11 games at first base, 6 games at short and 5 games at second base... Hit .323 (10-31) in the Triple-A playoffs with 4 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR & 5 RBI in 8 games, hitting for the cycle in game 3 of the International League finals on Sept. 18 at Indianapolis before injuring his left shoulder sliding into home plate in the 8th inning of that very same game, ending his season...Underwent shoulder surgery on October 2nd at the Cleveland Clinic (Dr. Mark Schickendantz) to repair a torn labrum (5-to-6 month recovery).


Spent the year between the Washington and Cleveland organizations after being acquired by the Indians at the trade deadline in exchange for Asdrubal Cabrera ... Indians ownership paid the remainder of Cabrera's salary in order to obtain Walters ... Upon being acquired was assigned to the AAA Columbus roster where he hit .387 (12-31) with 4 2B, 2 HR and 8 RBI in 7 games...In his third game with the Clippers he went 3-for-5 w/3RS, 2 HR and 6 RBI at Pawtucket on August 3 ... Combined at AAA between Syracuse and Columbus he hit .310 (83-268) w/22 2B, 5 3B, 17 HR (T 6th in IL on August 9) and 56 RBI in 67 games...Overall on the year between MLB and AAA he hit 27 home runs in 395 at bats (HR every 14.6AB)...His .980 OPS would have been 2nd in the IL with proper amount of at bats (spent 3 months in the Majors in 2014). Began the year in Syracuse before being recalled to Washington on April 13, where he spent the next five weeks until being sent down on May 24...Was recalled a second time by Washington from July 23-31...Hit his first career Major League home run on April 15 at Miami off Dan Jennings...Overall with the Nats he appeared in 3 games at shortstop and third base and 1 game apiece at second and left field (23 games as a PH). International League All-Star hit 29 homers for Syracuse in first complete Triple-A campaign (had entered 2013 with 25 career long balls)...was Syracuse's first All-Star shortstop since Cesar Izturis in 2001...16 of 29 long balls came at cavernous NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse...29 home runs tied for the lead among all Triple-A players with Mauro Gomez (Mets organization)...paced Triple-A with 66 extra-base hits and the IL with 247 total bases...was a 2-time International League Player of the Week...made MLB with the Nationals in September...legged out pinch-hit infield single (off Jose Fernandez) in initial big league contest, Sept. 6 at MIA...facing former organization, tripled in season finale, Sept. 29 at ARI...following the season, hit .240 wtih 3 homers and 6 RBI in 15 games with the Margarita Braves of the Venezuelan Winter League.


Hit a career-best 12 home runs in first complete season in Washington's chain...combined to hit .266 with 40 extra-base hits and 49 RBI in 126 games for the top 3 affiliates in the Nationals' system (Syracuse of the Triple-A International League, Harrisburg of the Double-A Eastern League, Potomac of the Single-A Carolina League)...all 12 home runs came in season's final 3 months (did not hit first long ball until June 2 with Potomac)...homered in 3 consecutive games from June 2-3...made Double-A debut on June 19 and hit .350 in first 15 games with Harrisburg...tallied 21 extrabase hits in 43 games with the Senators...debuted with Syracuse on August 3...following the season, played in 34 games for Ponce in the Puerto Rican Winter League and hit .254 with 10 doubles, 15 RBI and 10 walks.
