No. 2 prospect Verdugo gets callup for debut

Joc Pederson finished sixth in National League Rookie of the Year Award voting two years ago, Corey Seager won the award last year, Cody Bellinger is the clear favorite this year and the Dodgers took the wraps off their candidate for next year when they started Alex Verdugo in the outfield for his Major League debut Friday night. Verdugo is ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the Dodgers' No. 2 prospect and is No. 28 on the Top 100 Prospects list.

Dodgers getting second opinion on Dayton's elbow

Dodgers left-hander Grant Dayton was sent back to Los Angeles on Saturday to get a second opinion on the left elbow soreness that he experienced Friday before a scheduled rehab appearance for Double-A Tulsa.

Dayton...married to Cori...played three seasons at Auburn University (AL), earning Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball, as well as SEC All-Freshman Team honors in 2008...earned numerous accolades at Bob Jones High School (AL), including 2006 First Team All-State, All-Metro 6A Super Team Pitcher of the Year, All-Metro 6A Team (twice) and Alabama Baseball Coaches Association North Team...originally selected by the Marlins in the 11th round of the 2010 Draft.

2016

Reinstated from disabled list on May 20 and made first appearance of season that night, taking loss at Mississippi (1.0 IP, 1 R). In first 10 games following reinstatement, went 1-2 with a 3.27 ERA (11.0/4). Over final 20 appearances of season, was 3-2 with one save and a 2.00 ERA (27.0/6). Earned first win on June 1 at Pensacola, tossing just 0.1 inning. On August 10 at Pensacola, logged season-high 3.0 innings. Did not allow a hit or run while striking out five. Recorded three five-strikeout games: June 30 vs. Pensacola, August 10 at Pensacola and August 14 vs. Birmingham. Tallied 16 multi-strikeout efforts. Allowed runs in just seven appearances and did not surrender more than two runs in any appearance. Opponents posted .158 average (6x38) with runners in scoring position.
