Giles struck on wrist by line drive in BP

Astros closer Ken Giles was unavailable to pitch Saturday after being struck on the right wrist by a line drive during batting practice prior to a game against the Angels. He was diagnosed with a right wrist contusion after X-rays came up negative, the team said.

Full name is Jandel Francisco Gustave...Spent his entire career in the Houston organization, after signing as a non-drafted free agent on May 25, 2010...Enjoyed a solid 2013 season, going 2-3 with a 2.68 ERA in 10 starts for the Greenville Aces…his ERA would have ranked seventh in the Appalachian League, however he was 16.0 innings shy of reaching the minimum to qualify...Also ranked 20th in the league in strikeouts (49)...Lost his first nine professional decisions, before claiming his first win on July 10, 2012, tossing 3.0 innings of relief in a 9-7 win over the Gulf Coast League Marlins.

Spent the entire season at Double A Corpus Christi, where he was a Texas League Midseason All-Star and finished second in the Texas League in saves (20)...went 5-2 with a 2.15 ERA (14ER/58.2IP), 49 strikeouts and a .235 opponent batting average in 46 relief outings...did not give up an earned run in an 18-game stretch from June 3-Aug. 11, going 9-for-10 in save opportunities in that span...spent the majorityof Spring Training with the Royals Major League club, where he went 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA, six strikeouts and one save in 7.1 innings in the Cactus League...also pitched 1.0 scoreless inning with the Padres during the Spring after getting claimed off waivers by the club on March 26...was selected by Boston in the 2014 Rule 5 Draft (6th overall) before getting traded to Kansas City...pitched for Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Winter League following the season...was named the No. 30 prospect in the Royals organization by Baseball America prior to the season.
