Thornburg to undergo shoulder surgery

Red Sox right-hander Tyler Thornburg will undergo season-ending surgery on Friday for thoracic outlet syndrome in his throwing shoulder.

Full name is Tyler Michael Thornburg. Signed by Ryan Robinson (Brewers). Graduated from Riverwood (GA) High School. Attended Charleston Southern University, where he was a pitcher and outfielder...Was a 2010 Second Team All-Big South selection. Played for the Winchester Royals of the Valley League in the summer of 2008 and for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League in 2009. His mother, Dottye, was a Junior Olympic swimmer.

Set career highs for games (67), innings (67.0), wins (8), strikeouts (90), and saves (13) for MIL. Ranked 8th among NL pitchers (min. 50.0 IP) in ERA (2.15), 7th in WHIP (0.94), and 3rd in opponent AVG (.162). Struck out 90 batters in 67.0 IP...His 12.1 SO/9.0 IP ranked 5th among NL pitchers (min. 50.0 IP).
