Edgin targets 2016 opener after elbow surgery

Joshua Wayne (Josh) Edgin graduated from Mercersburg Academy (PA) before attending Ohio State University in 2007...He transferred to Francis Marion University (SC) in 2009... Drafted in the 50th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft by Atlanta, but did not sign.


Began the year with Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League...Was recalled on May 15...Missed over two weeks (August 24-September 8) due to left elbow soreness...Retired the first 23 first batters faced, a franchise record to start a season...His streak ended on July 7...Retired 40 of 47 first batters...Had a 1.32 ERA, the fifth-lowest in the majors among pitchers with 25.0 or more innings...Allowed one earned run with two walks and 20 strikeouts in 16.2 innings (0.54 ERA) on the road...It was the lowest ERA in the NL (minimum 15.0 innings) and the second-lowest in the majors to Oakland's Fernando Abad (0.36)...His 0.54 road ERA was the second-lowest in team history behind Pedro Feliciano (0.30 ERA in 2006) using a minimum of 15.0 innings...Did not allow an earned run in August or September (17 games, 10.0 innings)...He allowed seven hits and struck out 14 during that span...He had a 0.86 ERA (two earned runs/21.0 innings) from June 5 through the end of the year (37 games)...Also did not surrender a run in 13 day games (7.0 innings)...Held lefthanders to a .185 (12-65) batting average and righties to a .219 (7-32) mark.
