The Marlins thinned out their pitching numbers on Wednesday by making eight moves. Included were three pitchers ranked by MLBPipeline.com among the organization's top 10 prospects: Jarlin Garcia (No. 3), Kendry Flores (No. 5) and Jacob Esch (No. 9).

Marlins sign Mathis, claim Berry

Before taking a couple of days off to celebrate the holidays, the Marlins on Wednesday afternoon announced the signing of catcher Jeff Mathis to a one-year contract, and also claimed left-hander Tim Berry off waivers from the Orioles.

Timothy David Berry...graduated San Marcos (CA) High School in 2009 and was a 50th-round selection of Orioles despite undergoing Tommy John surgery during senior season.

2015

Struggled in sixth professional season, going 2-7 with 7.32 ERA (82.1 ip/67 er) in 23 games (15 starts) for Double-A Bowie in Baltimore Orioles system...Opened season in starting rotation prior to finishing season in bullpen...As starter, went 2-7 with 7.75 ERA (74.1/64) and had no record with 3.38 ERA (8.0/3) in eight relief appearances...Limited Richmond to just three hits and no runs over 4.0 innings in first start of season, April 9...In next start, April 14 at Harrisburg, allowed season-high eight runs over 4.2 innings, taking first loss of campaign...Dropped three more decisions over following eight starts to mark longest losing streak of season...On May 1 vs. Harrisburg, tossed season-best 8.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs while walking one and striking out season-high five...Earned first win on June 4 at New Hampshire, giving up just one run on three hits and three walks over 6.2 frames...Followed with second win in next start, June 10 vs. Binghamton, equaling season-high with five strikeouts...Took loss in each of next three starts, allowing total of 20 earned runs in 11.0 innings...Made first bullpen appearance on July 5 vs. Erie, going 1.1 innings...Placed on seven-day disabled list on August 7 with left knee sprain and missed remainder of season.
