Marlins make eight roster moves

The Marlins thinned out their pitching numbers on Wednesday by making eight moves. Included were three pitchers ranked by MLBPipeline.com among the organization's top 10 prospects: Jarlin Garcia (No. 3), Kendry Flores (No. 5) and Jacob Esch (No. 9).

Cosart among injured Marlins hurlers on mend

Miami has several pitchers on the disabled list who are getting close to rejoining the roster. Jarred Cosart (left inner ear disorder) is scheduled to make a rehab start for Class A Advanced Jupiter on Tuesday, and Jose Urena (left knee contusion) is scheduled to throw two innings for Jupiter on Monday.

In seventh professional season, appeared at Single-A, Double-A, Triple-A and Major League levels with Miami, combining on a 7-7 record and 2.55 ERA (130.2 ip/37 er)...Opened season at Double-A Jacksonville, and in nine starts with Suns went 3-3 with 2.06 ERA (56.2/13). Allowed three-or-fewer runs in each start, allowing high of three twice (April 17 vs. Montgomery and April 22 at Biloxi)...Struck out season-high eight on April 29 vs. Birmingham. Equaled high three starts later on May 15 vs. Pensacola...Tossed season-high 8.0 innings on May 4 at Chattanooga, holding the Lookouts to just one hit while walking one and striking out five...Prior to promotion, led Southern League in WHIP (0.85) and ranked fourth in ERA...Recalled by Miami on June 2 and made Major League debut on June 6 at Colorado. Tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk...In second appearance on June 8 at Toronto, allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings...Optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on June 12, and posted 3-2 record and 2.61 ERA (58.2/17) in 10 starts with the Zephyrs, prior to second recall on August 7. Made 20 starts with Class A San Jose in Giants organization, posting 4-6 record and 4.09 ERA (105.2 IP/48 ER) with 112 strikeouts compared to 32 walks. Season was cut short after going on seven-day DL with right shoulder impingement on August 7...Opened season with 3-4 record and 5.87 ERA (53.2/35) over first 11 starts, with 62 hits allowed, 20 walks and 55 strikeouts. Surrendered four-or-more runs seven times while pitching past the sixth inning three times in stretch...Over final nine starts, went 1-2 with 2.25 ERA (52.0/13) and 39 hits allowed. Struck out 57 while walking just 12, working at-least 6.0 innings six times...Had season-best 13-strikeout performance in June 22 loss at Visalia. Allowed just two runs on three hits with one walk over 7.0 innings...Completed July with 2.22 ERA (28.1/7) in five starts, marking lowest monthly ERA of season...Owned identical .249 opponents averages to both left (44x177) and right-handed (57x229) hitters.

2013

Had the best season of his professional career with Class-A Augusta, going 10-6 with a 2.73 ERA (43er, 141.2ip) in 22 starts. Ranked first in the South Atlantic League in WHIP (0.92), second in innings pitched (141.2), third in strikeouts (137) and fifth in ERA (2.73). Tossed his first career complete game on June 5 but suffered the loss, as he allowed two earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. 15 of his 22 starts were quality outings. Held left-handed opponents to a .194 (44-for-227) average against. Recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts on Aug. 21 at Lexington...hurled 8.0 innings, yielding just one run on six hits and no walks.
