Reds demote three from struggling bullpen

The Reds bullpen has been the club's weakest link so far during what has been a rough season. Following Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Mariners, more changes were made. Jumbo Diaz and Keyvius Sampson were optioned to Triple-A Louisville, and Steve Delabar was designated for assignment.

Was 1 of 9 rookie pitchers who combined for 110 starts for the Reds, both single-season modern club records...the Reds' season-ending streak of 64 consecutive starts by rookies, beginning 7/29, is a modern Major League record...began the season on Louisville's disabled list with a strained right forearm...was reinstated on 4/20 and made his first 8 starts of the season for Pensacola before he was promoted on 6/10 to Louisville...joined the Reds on 7/30 to fill one of the spots in the rotation vacated after the deadline trades of RHP Johnny Cueto to the Royals and RHP Mike Leake to the Giants...that night vs the Pirates made his Major League debut by throwing a perfect eighth inning and striking out 2 of his 3 batters (Pedro Florimon, Travis Ishikawa)...in his next appearance, on 8/2 vs Pit made his first career start in the 3-0 loss...earned his first career victory in his second start, on 8/8 at Ari (4-1 win)...after the relief appearance in his big league debut made his last 12 apps for the Reds as a starter... was claimed off waivers from the Padres in January...in spring training produced a 2.25era in 4 relief apps before he was optioned to Louisville on 3/20... following the season had arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow.

2014

Split season between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson...opened season at Tucson, struggling in four starts before going 10-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 19 games, 18 starts, for the Missions...Ranked tied for third in the Texas League with 10 wins despite making just 19 outings for San Antonio...His 2.26 ERA led the club, but did not qualify for the Texas League leaders...Prior to his August promotion back to Tucson, went 8-0 with a 1.58 ERA (12 ER, 68.2 IP) in his final 12 starts for the Missions...Was named Padres' organization Pitcher of the Month in both June and July...Pitched for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League and was a Fall Stars Game selection...allowed just one earned run over 11.1 innings in seven outings, one start, posting a 0.79 ERA...Following the season, was rated as the Padres' No. 9 prospect by Baseball America.

2012

Spent the entire campaign with Double-A San Antonio, making 26 appearances, including 25 starts...Despite 8-11 record with 5.00 ERA, allowed just 108 hits in 122.1 innings while striking out 122.

2011

Named the Padres' organizational Pitcher of the Year after posting a 12-3 record with a 2.90 ERA in 24 starts for Class-A Fort Wayne...held opponents to a .192 average and struck out 143 in 118.0 innings...Named a MiLB.com Padres' organizational All-Star following the season...Also named a Low Class-A All-Star by Baseball America...Was a Midwest League mid-season All-Star...Ranked third in the Midwest League in strikeouts (143), fourth in WHIP (1.10), tied for fourth in wins (12) and seventh in ERA (2.90).
