Rays to begin season without Boxberger

When closer Brad Boxberger began experiencing some discomfort while throwing off the mound this spring, the Rays thought it was probably nothing more than a tight hamstring. It turned out to be more serious than that.

His 70 appearances tied SEA Carson Smith for the AL rookie lead and set a Rays rookie record...the previous mark of 64 was shared by Esteban Yan (1998) and Ruddy Lugo (2006)...led the AL outright with 62 apps through the end of August, and finished the season tied for 9th…Set a club record by retiring 32 consecutive batters faced, June 6-24, breaking the mark previously held by Kyle Farnsworth (26) in 2011...passed Farnsworth on June 22 vs. TOR...according to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the longest streak by any rookie since COL David Cortes (33) from Aug 6-27, 2005…His .192 opp avg.
