The Padres made a few moves to help strengthen their bullpen Tuesday, the day that rosters expanded.

Padres add Mateo, Quackenbush; Thayer to DL

The Padres added two relievers to their 25-man roster before Wednesday's game against the Giants. The club selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Marcos Mateo from Triple-A El Paso and recalled righty Kevin Quackenbush from El Paso.

Made his first Opening Day roster and set career-highs in games (63), innings pitched (55.0), strikeouts (62) and holds (20)...Posted a career-best 25-game, 23.1-scoreless inning streak from 7/23 to 9/12…the streak, in terms of innings, was the secondlongest by a National League reliever in 2014, behind only Jean Machi's-SF 25.1-inning scoreless streak from 4/16 - 6/21...The streak was the longest by a Padre since Kevin Correia also had a 23.1-inning streak in 2009 and the longest by a Padre reliever since Cla Meredith had a franchise-best 33.2-inning streak in 2006…his 25-straight games without allowing a run was second-longest in team history, behind Meredith's 28 games...Stranded 42 of his 48 inherited runners (85.7%), the fifth-best rate in the National League and tied for eighth-best in Major League Baseball...Held the opposition scoreless in 51 of his 63 appearances and held his opponent hitless in 34 outings...Placed on the 15-day disabled list on 6/15 with right shoulder fatigue and missed 27 games…made two rehabilitation appearances for Single-A Lake Elsinore, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing two hits with a strikeout…was activated from the DL on 7/19...Limited right-handed hitters to a .190 batting average (24-for-126) while lefties hit .274 (20-for-73) against him...Posted a 0-2 record with a 5.67 ERA (17 ER, 27.0 IP) in 30 appearances during the first half of the season compared to a 1-0 record with 1.61 ERA (5 ER, 28.0 IP) during the second half, after being reinstated from the DL on July 19.

Opened the season with Triple-A Tucson, but made 45 appearances for the Padres as a late-inning reliever...Set career-highs in wins (6), games (45), innings (46.1) and strikeouts (49)...Had two stints with the Padres: May 30-31 and June 11-end of the season...Limited opposing hitters to a .202 (33-for-163) batting average, 15th-best in the National League amongst relievers...Limited right-handers to a .122 (11-for-90) batting average, the 2nd-best mark in the Majors behind Atlanta's Craig Kimbrel (.116)...the .122 mark was the fourth-best ever by a Padres pitcher vs. right handed batters (min. 75 at bats)...His 2.14 ERA (11 ER, 46.1 IP) ranked ninth in the National League amongst relievers (min. 45.0 IP) and 21st in the Majors...Had a 0.36 ERA (1 ER, 25.1 IP) at Petco Park, the lowest single-season ERA at the park (min. 25.0 IP)...previous low was Luke Gregerson's 0.65 ERA in 2009...Earned the first save of his career on June 12 vs. Atlanta, striking out Justin Upton who represented the go-ahead run.

2012 Split the season between the minor leagues and the Big League club, seeing his first Major League action with 27 relief appearances for the Padres. Began the season on the DL in the minor leagues...reinstated from the minor league DL on 5/10 and began the year with Triple-A Tucson. Was recalled from Triple-A Tucson for his first Major League stint on 5/18 but optioned back on 5/20 without having made his Big League debut. Went 0-1 with an 11.42 ERA (11ER/8.2IP)over his first nine outings of the year with Tucson before being transferred to Double-A San Antonio...was 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA(2 ER/9.2 IP) and 15 strikeouts against no walks and just four hits allowed in his first nine outings with San Antonio before being recalled for a second stint with San Diego on 6/26. Made his Major League debut during his second stint on 6/26 at HOU, working 2.0 scoreless innings. Earned his first Major League victory in his second outing on 6/28 at HOU. Recalled for a third stint on 7/16, working three scoreless innings before being optioned back to Tucson on 7/22. Recalled for a fourth and final stint on 8/18, going 1-0 with a 0.49 ERA (1ER/18.1 IP), a .169 (11-for-65) opponents batting average and 20 strikeouts against three walks over his final 20 outings for San Diego. Went 1-0 with a 0.42 ERA(1 ER/21.2 IP), a .171 (13-for-76) opponents batting average and 23 strikeouts against just five walks over his final 23 outings from 7/16 through the end of the season. With Triple-A Tucson, after his first stint with the T-Pads, went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA(3 ER/13.0 IP) and 11 strikeouts against four walks from 7/6-8/16. From the time of his fourth and final recall on 8/18 through the end of the season, his 0.49 ERA(1 ER/18.1 IP) was the fifth-best ERA among all Big League pitchers with a minimum of 15.0 innings over that stretch, second-best among NL pitchers. Worked scoreless ball in 23 of his 27 outings overall for San Diego, including 22 of his final 23 outings. Overall for San Diego, struck out 28 batters in 26.1 inning in 2012 for a 9.6 strikeouts per 9.0 IP ratio. Held Big League hitters to a .198 (19-for-96) average, including a .139 (5-for-36) average against left-handers and a .233 (14-for-60) mark against right-handed hitters.
