Mike's dad, David, is an algebra teacher and women's golf coach at Hart High School in Newhall, Calif. ...when Mike was in middle school, he and his dad would go to baseball games at Hart to watch a promising pitcher who was one of David's students...the pitcher's name was James Shields...this past Dec. 9, Mike was part of the package of four prospects the Rays acquired from the Royals in exchange for Shields and Wade Davis. Mike and James ran into each other a week after the trade was completed at a Hart High School ceremony retiring Shields' No. 33...Mike's mother, Jeannette, comes from a long line of dairy farmers who fled Holland during World War II and arrived at the U.S. via Ellis Island...Mike's grandfather, Ed Tjaarda, was six years old when the family left Holland...Mike's great-grandfather helped Jews hide from the Nazis at his farm...the Tjaarda family now owns an 800-acre dairy farm in Bakersfield, Calif., with 6,000 cattle...Both his parents played college basketball: his father at Tennessee Temple, his mother Jeannette at Cal Poly Pomona.
