Kontos to the DL as Giants shuffle bullpen

Giants right-handers George Kontos went to the 15-day disabled list and Chris Heston was sent to Triple-A Sacramento's starting rotation. Meanwhile, the Giants recalled right-hander Mike Broadway and left-hander Steven Okert from Sacramento.

Bochy confirms rotation order

Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced after Friday's 8-5 split-squad victory over Kansas City that the ballclub's first four starters will be, in order, Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija and Jake Peavy.

Nicknamed "Hesto Presto" by his teammates....Graduated from Bayside (FL) High School...attended Seminole Community College and East Carolina University....Went 8-9 with a 4.76 ERA in 107.2 innings pitched in two seasons at Seminole Community College....Named first-team All-Conference USA and Conference USA Newcomer-of-the-Year in 2009....Went 7-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 15 starts with East Carolina in 2009…led Conference USA in strikeouts (88) in 2009....Was selected by Minnesota in the 47th round of the 2007 June draft and by Washington in the 29th round of the 2008 June draft, but did not sign.

2015

Made 31 starts with the Giants, going 12-11 with a 3.95 ERA (78er, 177.2ip) during his rookie campaign....His 12 victories were the most by a Giants rookie pitcher since Matt Cain had 13 in 2006 and his 141 strikeouts were the most since Tim Lincecum recorded 150 in 2007....Went 11-5 with a 3.24 ERA (47er, 130.2ip) and 101 strikeouts in his first 21 starts...however, was 1-6 with a 5.94 ERA (31er, 47.0ip) and 40 strikeouts in his final 10 outings....Allowed 4.29 walks per 9.0 innings (41 walks, 86.0ip) over his last 16 starts after giving up just 2.21 walks per 9.0 innings (21 walks in 85.2ip) in his first 15 outings....Posted the eighth-highest ground ball rate among NL starters at 53.3% and ranked second among NL pitchers for the most double-plays induced with 26 behind only John Lackey (29)....Did not make the Opening Day roster, but started the third game of the season in place of Matt Cain, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 7 with a strained flexor tendon in his throwing arm....On April 13, became just the second rookie pitcher to start a Giants home opener…the only other pitcher to do so was Alan Fowlkes on April 13, 1982 vs. San Diego...Finished the month of April with a 2.77 ERA, becoming the fifth rookie in Giants' history to post a sub-3.00 ERA in the opening month of the season (min. 20ip)....Threw a two-hitter without issuing a walk and struck out 10 batters May 12 at Houston…according to Elias, only two rookie pitchers over the last 25 seasons pitched a game like that (CG, 2 or fewer hits allowed, 0 BB, 10+ SO): Kerry Wood in his 20-strikeout game on May 6, 1998 and Shelby Miller on May 10, 2013...no other Giants rookie since 1900 had a game like this....Tossed the first no-hitter of the 2015 season, the 17th in Giants franchise history and the first by a Giants rookie in 103 years on June 9 at New York-NL in the Giants' 5-0 win...struck out a career-best 11 batters and allowed three baserunners, all coming via hit by pitch....Is the third Giants rookie to throw a no-hitter, joining Jeff Tesreau (Sept. 6, 1912 at PHI) and Christy Mathewson (July 15, 1901 vs. STL)....According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Heston became the first pitcher to finish a no-hitter with three consecutive strikeouts since Sandy Koufax did so in his perfect game on Sept. 9, 1965 vs. Chicago-NL....Became the first rookie pitcher to strike out more than 10 batters without issuing a walk in a no-no...his three hit by pitches resulted in the only baserunners for the Mets - no other pitcher in ML history hit at least three opposing batters while completing a no-hitter....Was named NL Co-Player of the Week along with Miami's Giancarlo Stanton for the week of June 8-14. > Posted a 1.57 ERA in July, the third-lowest figure by a Giants rookie in any given month since the team moved to SF in 1958....Spent nearly the entire season with the Giants before being optioned to triple-A Sacramento Aug. 21, as the team needed an open spot in their rotation for Mike Leake, who was coming off the DL...did not start any games for the River Cats after having been optioned and instead threw two bullpen sessions...was recalled from triple-A on Aug. 28, replacing Matt Cain in the rotation.

2014

Had his contract purchased from triple-A Fresno on Sept. 2...Made his Major League debut on Sept. 13 vs. Los Angeles-NL, tossing 1.0-scoreless inning of relief in the 9th inning...Made his first career Major League start on Sept. 28 vs. San Diego...allowed three earned runs in 4.0 innings...Went 12-9 with a 3.38 ERA (65er, 173.0ip) in 28 starts for the Grizzlies, leading the team with 17 quality starts.

2013

In his fifth professional season, went 7-6 with a 5.80 ERA (70 ER, 108.2 IP) for triple-A Fresno...Threw his first career complete game shutout on June 13 vs. Tucson…allowed just five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts...Was named PCL Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 10-17...Entered the season as the Giants 17th best prospect, according to Baseball America...Finished tied for the most wins on the club with seven...Left-handed batters hit .352 (69-for-196) off him...Allowed 27 runs (25 ER) in the 1st inning over his 19 starts (11.84 ERA)...Was designated for assignment on July 13th to clear a 40-man roster space for outfielder Jeff Francoeur and was released on July 21…cleared waivers and was re-signed to a minor league contract with the Giants on July 24.

2012 Spent the entire season with double-A Richmond, going 9-8 with a 2.24 ERA (37er, 148.2ip) in 25 starting assignments en route to being named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. Led the Eastern League in ERA (2.24) and WHIP (1.10)... finished fifth among all full-season minor league leaders in ERA...it marked the second-lowest ERA in Flying Squirrels' franchise history (Eric Surkamp, 2.02 in 2011). Placed fourth in the league with 135 strikeouts and his .230 opponents avg. against also ranked as the fourth lowest in the circuit...among Eastern League starting pitchers, boasted the fewest baserunners per 9.0 innings pitched (10.17). Allowed more than three earned runs in a start just twice in 25 starts. Conceded just one earned run in the month of May (3-0, 0.26 ERA, 35ip, 34 strikeouts in five starts). Was named to the Western Division Eastern League midseason All-Star team. Was named as the right-handed starting pitcher on the Eastern League postseason All-Star team. Was also named as the Flying Squirrels' Pitcher of the Year. Was selected to the Topps double-A All-Star team. Was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for May 21-29. Added to the Giants' 40-man roster in November.
