Paul Arthur Clemens Bio Info

Graduated from Robinson HS in Fairfax, VA, and went on to pitch two years (2006-07) at Louisburg JC in North Carolina before being drafted for the first time...posted a 7-1 record and a 2.37 ERA (17ER/64.1IP) in his sophomore season (2007) and was drafted by San Francisco in the 36th round of the June 2007 Draft, but did not sign. Returned to Louisburg to go 4-3 with a 5.08 ERA (23ER/41.1IP) in 2008 ... drafted by Atlanta in the seventh round that June and signed by Braves scout Billy Best. Acquired by Houston along with LHP Brett Oberholtzer in the 2011 Michael Bourn trade to Atlanta ... Clemens was taken in the same draft by ATL just one round before Oberholtzer (8th)...since then, the two have played together in five of their six professional seasons (2009 the only exception) ... at the time of their trade to Houston, both players were rooming together while with Double A Mississippi when informed of the trade. Selected to the Major League roster on Nov. 19, 2011, marking his first stint on a 40-man roster ... is currently signed to a one-year contract that runs through the 2014 season.

2013

Finished the season with a club-leading four relief wins in 30 appearances...also made five starts, in which he posted a 3.71 ERA (11ER/25.2IP)...went 2-0 and did not allow a run in 6.1 innings across six Interleague games...was one of three Astros pitchers to make their first MLB start this season (also, Cosart, Oberholtzer)...the Astros finished their season with four rookie starters pitching well since July 12...over that time frame, Clemens, Cosart, Oberholtzer and Peacock combined for a 2.70 ERA (63ER/209.2IP) in their 35 starts... despite pitching well in Spring Training (1.69 ERA, 1ER/5.1IP), began the year with Triple A OKC and made one start before his first MLB recall on April 8...was the second player recalled by the club this season... spent the next four months in the Astros bullpen before being optioned to OKC on July 26...worked as a starter for the RedHawks, making five starts before his final recall on Aug. 27 ... made five starts to finish his season with the Astros...after beginning the year in a long-relief role for the Astros, worked his way up to a set-up role and earned seven holds...posted a 3-2 record with a 4.13 ERA (15ER/32.2IP) over his first 17 appearances (thru May 29)...had a 11.57 ERA (18ER/14IP) over his next 13 before his option on July 26 ... made his MLB debut on April 9 at SEA and tossed 4.0 innings in relief, earning the win...the only other Astros pitcher to toss 4+ innings and earn a win in relief on their MLB debut was RHP Don Wilson (6IP) on Sept. 29, 1966 at CIN...in his second MLB game, worked 5.1 scoreless innings of relief on April 15 at OAK, allowing just one hit...marked the longest scoreless relief app. by an Astro since RHP Shane Reynolds went 7.0 scoreless frames on July 17, 1994 at PIT...was also the longest relief appearance by an Astro since RHP Dave Borkowski went 6.0 innings (2ER) on Aug. 15, 2006 vs. CHC...had a solid run over a month and a half span from April 15-May 29, during which he went 2-2 with five holds and a 3.14 ERA (10ER/28.2IP) in 16 apps...allowed a .216 (22x108) opponent's batting average during that stretch...in his six starts with Triple A OKC, went 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA (15ER/30IP) ... allowed just a .235 (27x115) opponent's batting average in his 30.0 innings of Triple A work.

2012 Posted a combined 11-10 record and a 5.78 ERA (92ER/143.1IP) in 27 starts between Double A Corpus Christi (7g) and Triple A Oklahoma City (20g)...began his season at OKC, where he went 8-8 with a 6.73 ERA (76ER/101.2IP) and 68 strikeouts in 20 starts...fared better at home while with the RedHawks, posting a 5-2 record with a 3.09 ERA (16ER/46.2IP) in eight starts at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark...played an integral role in Corpus Christi's playoff-push after joining the club on July 27...went 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA (16ER/41.2IP) and 37 punchouts in seven starts with the Hooks...earned two victories while putting up a 1.00 ERA (2ER/18.0IP) over his final three starts of the 2012 season...was named the August Pitcher of the Month for Corpus Christi...tabbed by Baseball America as the No. 27 prospect in the Houston system after the year 2011 Combined to post an 8-7 record and a 3.81 ERA (61ER/144IP) in 26 starts for Double A Mississippi (20g), Double A Corpus Christi (5g) and Triple A Oklahoma City (1g) this season...acquired midseason by Houston from Atlanta as part of the Michael Bourn trade on July 31...after his acquisition, was assigned to Corpus Christi, where he went 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA (8ER/30.2IP) in five starts, which included a run of 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings...finished his season with one start at Oklahoma City... was a Southern League All-Star, in what was his fourth year as a professional 2010 Went 2-0 with one save while allowing just three ER in 19.0 IP (1.42 ERA) for Rome (A) before his promotion to Myrtle Beach (High A) 2009 Appeared in 26 games, including 11 starts in second professional season...had a 3-5 record with a 6.04 ERA in 11 starts and was 3-0 with three saves and a 5.71 ERA in 15 relief appearances. 2008 Went 4-4 with a save and a 3.58 ERA in 14 games (9gs) between Rome (A), Danville (R) and the Gulf Coast League...recorded his first career save on June 1 at JCY and his first career win on July 11 vs. BUR (1ER/5IP).
