Matthew David Buschmann was originally signed by Padres scout Ash Lawson…graduated from Lafayette High School in Wildwood, Missouri … attended Vanderbilt University.

2013

Combined for a 14-5 record and a 2.86 ERA in 29 games, including 28 starts, for Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham in the Tampa Bay organization…struck out 167 batters, which was third most in all of minor league baseball…tied for third in the minors in wins…allowed just 10 home runs in 160.2 innings, an average of 0.56 per nine innings…had career highs in wins, games started, innings pitched, walks (67) and strikeouts and the ERA was a career low…began the season at Montgomery and went 6-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 11 starts before he was promoted to Durham May 31…was tied for the Southern League lead in wins, ranked third in strikeouts (63) and innings pitched (63.2) and 10th in ERA at the time of his promotion…compiled an 8-2 record, one save and a 2.97 ERA in 18 games, 17 starts, with the Bulls…struck out 104, which was the most in the International League from the time he joined the club May 31 through the end of the season…also tied for third in the IL in wins over that stretch and ranked ninth in ERA…combined with both clubs for a .234 opponents batting average, which included a .195 (64-for-328) mark against right-handed hitters compared to .283 (75-for-265) against left-handers… surrendered seven of his 10 home runs to right-handers…eight of the home runs were solo shots… held the opposition to a .238 average with runners in scoring position…his teams were 20-8 (.714) in his starting assignments…tossed at least six innings in 14 of his 28 starts, allowed one run or fewer 14 times and walked two batters or fewer 15 times…had 14 outings with more strikeouts than innings pitched.

MINORS: Walked a season-high four batters in a season-low 3.2 innings for the loss in his first start of the season April 4 against Birmingham…then put together a five-game winning streak over his next seven starts from April 10 to May 13 … compiled a 1.88 ERA and .209 opponents batting average over that span … tossed 6.0 shutout innings in one of his no decisions during the winning streak, April 26 against Birmingham…fired a season-high 8.0 innings May 2 at Pensacola, allowing just one run in a 6-1 victory…had his winning streak snapped May 18 at Huntsville when he allowed a season-high nine hits in the second game of a doubleheader…also lost his next start May 23 against Jackson when he struck out a season-high nine in 5.0 innings…also issued four walks and tossed a season-high 108 pitches in that contest…tossed 7.0 scoreless innings for the win in his final Double-A start May 28 at Mississippi… went 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA and .225 opponents batting average in six starts in May for Montgomery… was promoted to Durham May 31 and made his only relief appearance of the season that day against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre…tossed 2.2 perfect innings of relief for the save in an 8-4 win…compiled his second five-game winning streak of the season from June 8 to July 13…logged a 2.58 ERA and .222 opponents batting average over that five-start stretch…matched his season highs in walks (4) and strikeouts (9) June 15 against Indianapolis … allowed just one run in three consecutive starts from July 3 to 13 (18.0 ip, 1.50 ERA)…surrendered his final home run of the season July 13 against Gwinnett…finished the season with a nine-game, 51.1-inning homerless streak…allowed a season-high seven runs in 4.0 innings July 21 against Pawtucket but had a no decision in a 14-13 win…went 3-0 with a 3.72 ERA in six starts in July…struck out 40 in 34.0 innings…then went 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA in five starts in August… began the month by matching his season highs in walks (4), strikeouts (9) and pitches (108) in a 4-2 loss to Rochester Aug. 5…then went 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA over his final five starts…made one postseason start for the Bulls and had a no decision (4.2 ip, 2 h, 5 bb, 5 so).
