Carlos Rafael Gutierrez...2004 graduate of Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, FL...went 6-2 with a 2.70 ERA with 42 strikeouts and two saves in his senior season, leading Columbus to a 25-6 record and district and conference champions...attended the University of Miami and was red-shirted in 2007 to rehab his right elbow from "Tommy John" surgery...younger brother, David, was drafted by the Twins in the 37th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, also out of the University of Miami, but retired prior to the 2011 season...would have pitched for the Hurricanes together in 2007, if not for Carlos' elbow surgery. 2011 Was an invite to Twins Spring Training...was reassigned to minor league camp, March 30 and reported to Triple-A Rochester where he spent the entire season...Did not allow a home run in his first 29 appearances (44.2 ip), until allowing one to Dallas McPherson, June 20 vs. Charlotte...finished the season with just two home runs allowed, the other coming, August 22 at Scranton-Wilkes/Barre (Brandon Laird)...Placed on the 7-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis, July 12...reinstated, August 2...posted a 7.24 ERA (13.2 ip, 11 er) in 10 appearances after his return...Recorded 18 strikeouts in his final seven appearances (11.0 ip), August 15-September 5...struck out multiple batters in 17 of 43 appearances...Held left-handed batters to a .179 (20-for-112) batting average while right-handers batted .303 (40-for-132)...Set a career-high with 43 games, tied for second-most on the Red Wings' staff. 2010 Began the season with Double-A New Britain...started 16 games for the Rock Cats before moving to the bullpen in mid-July, where he did not allow a home run in 32.2 relief innings...Struck out at least one batter in all but two of his 32 games pitched at New Britain...struck out multiple batters in 21 of his appearances...Allowed just three runs in his final seven appearances (16.0 ip), with 15 strikeouts, before being promoted to Triple-A Rochester, September 3...Made two appearances for the Red Wings...tossed 3.0 shutout innings in his first Triple-A appearance, allowing two hits with four strikeouts, September 4 vs. Syracuse...Pitched for Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League, going 1-0, 6.55 (11.0 ip, 8 er) with 10 strikeouts in 12 games...named to the Arizona Fall League's Rising Star Team...Ranked as the Twins 10th-best prospect by Baseball America entering the 2011 season. 2009 Began the season with Single-A Ft.
