Brewers sign Miller to Minor League contract

After pitching for Tampa Bay's Triple-A team last season, 33-year-old reliever Jim Miller has followed his former farm director to Milwaukee by agreeing to a Minor League contract with the Brewers.

Signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent on 1/18…made his only Major League appearance as a September call-up in the club's 13-9 loss to Boston on 9/7 (1.1IP, 3H, 3ER, 1HR, 1BB)…prior to that, made 43 appearances (1 start) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and went 3-5 with a 3.55 ERA (63.1IP, 25ER)…was 6-for-9 in save opportunities…allowed a combined 9ER in his first 2G, but surrendered 1ER or fewer in 38 of his final 41G…produced a 1.84 ERA (29.1IP, 6ER) and held opponents to a .196 batting average (21-for-107) in his final 22G from 6/23-9/2… compiled a 0.45 ERA (20.0IP, 1ER) in 15G from 7/12-8/29, producing a scoreless streak of 10g and 10.2IP from 7/29-8/29 (15K, 2BB)… recorded monthly ERAs of 1.88 in June (8G), 1.98 in July (9G) and 0.00 in August (9G)…ranked third in the International League in K/9.0IP ratio (13.06)…produced a season-high 6K in 2.0IP on 4/26 vs. Columbus…had at least 3K in 16G…stranded 12-of-20 inherited runners…held lefties to a .176 batting average (19-for-108)…allowed 0H and 0R in his only start of the season on 8/10 vs. Buffalo (2.0IP, 3K, 1BB).

Began the year as a non-roster invitee with Oakland, and went 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA (48.2IP, 14ER) in 33 relief outings over four stints with the A's (4/25-5/11, 5/20-8/3, 8/24-31, 9/4-10/3)…produced a .136 opponents' BA against lefties (11-for-81) and a .217 mark overall (39-for-180)…allowed 8-of-18 (44.4%) inherited runners to score…first batters faced were 9-for-26 (.346) with 7BB… posted a 1.14 ERA (23.2IP, 3ER) over his first 16G through 6/24, then logged a 3.96 ERA (25.0IP, 11ER) over his final 17G… was signed to a Major League contract and selected from Triple-A Sacramento on 4/25…pitched that day against Chicago-AL and earned his first ML win in the A's 5-4, 14-inning victory…entered the game in the top of the 14th with runners on first and second and two outs and allowed a 2-run double to Alexei Ramirez…the A's came back with 3R in the bottom of the inning for the victory…spent the majority of the season with Sacramento, where he was 0-3 with 6 saves and a 2.79 ERA (19.1IP, 6ER) in 16 relief appearances… did not allow a home run… did not allow a run in the eighth (6.0IP) or ninth (7.2IP) innings…stranded all three of his inherited runners… was claimed by the Yankees off waivers on 11/30.

COLORADO SPRINGS: Went 8-5 with 24 saves and a 5.25 ERA in 65 relief appearances with Colorado Springs...the games pitched were a minor league career-high and the saves were second only to his 34 in 2005...tied for the Pacific Coast League lead in games pitched and tied for second in saves...the games pitched tied for third in all of minor league baseball...led the Rockies farm system in saves...averaged 2.13 walks per nine innings, which ranked third lowest among PCL relievers... struck out 73 batters in 72.0 innings, an average of 9.13 per nine innings...converted 24 of 29 (82.8%) save opportunities...allowed just 3 of 20 (15.0%) inherited runners to score...allowed a .314 opponents batting average, including .306 (48-for-157) against right-handed hitters and .324 (45-for-139) against left-handers...surrendered six of his seven home runs to righties...opponents hit .343 with runners in scoring position but were 2-for-13 (.154) with the bases loaded...posted a 6.12 ERA and had 13 saves in 43 appearances before the All-Star Break...then compiled a 3.27 ERA and tallied 11 saves in 22 outings after the break...tossed a season-high 3.0 innings April 11 against Reno...struck out a seasonhigh five batters in 2.2 innings in his next outing April 14, also against the Aces...did not record his first save until May 5 against Fresno...did not allow a run over an eight-game stretch from May 28 to June 12 (8.2 ip, 2 h, 1 bb, 9 so)...was charged with the blown save and loss in back-to-back outings against Tucson June 18 and 19, allowing six runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings...named to the Pacific Coast League Midseason All-Star Team and allowed a hit and a walk in 0.1 innings in the game against the International League All-Stars...allowed a season-high six runs on a season-high six hits in 1.0 inning Aug. 8 against Memphis but all six runs were unearned.
2010 Returned to Triple-A Norfolk and spent the entire year with the Tides for the second consecutive season...went 1-0 with a 4.84 ERA in 33 games, all in relief...the appearances were the fewest of his career and he did not record a save for the first time as a professional...allowed a .271 opponents batting average, including .269 against left-handed hitters and .273 against right-handers...opponents hit .323 with the bases empty compared to .206 with runners on...also yielded a .206 average with runners in scoring position...posted a 1.93 ERA in five appearances in July but had an ERA above 6.00 in two months (6.94 in April, 6.48 in August)...allowed 8 of 30 (26.6%) inherited runners to score... tossed at least 1.0 inning in 32 of his 33 outings, including 2.0 or more 16 times...struck out a seasonhigh six batters in 2.2 innings in his second outing of the season April 12 against Charlotte...credited with his only decision of the season May 7 against Toledo when he tossed a scoreless 12th inning in the Tides 3-2, 12-inning win...fired a season-high 3.0 scoreless innings June 17 at Toledo...that was part of a five-game streak from June 15 to 23 where he did not allow a run (9.0 ip)...was tagged with his only blown save June 26 against Louisville, allowing two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings...pitched for Hermosillo in the Mexican Winter League following the season and had a loss and a 12.60 ERA in six relief appearances. 2009 Spent the entire season at Triple-A Norfolk...was 4-4 with 17 saves and a 2.64 ERA in 54 relief appearances...surrendered just three home runs in 64.2 innings...tied for third in the International League in games pitched and tied for fourth in saves...allowed a .256 opponents batting average, including .207 by right-handed hitters and .324 by left-handers...had 16 saves in 34 games before the All-Star Break and was named to the IL Midseason All-Star team...had just one save in 20 appearances after the break...converted 17 of 22 (77.3%) save opportunities...allowed 6 of 21 (28.6%) inherited runners to score...converted each of his first 10 save opportunities, including seven saves in seven games from May 5 to 18...posted a 0.93 ERA over his first 19 appearances through May 27...allowed his first home run June 23 against Pawtucket, snapping a season-opening 27-game, 27.1-inning homerless streak. 2008 Began the year with Double-ABowie, going 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA(13.0IP, 5ER) and 17 strikeouts in seven games...Transferred from Bowie to Triple-ANorfolk on April 29
