Ryan Mattheus...played college ball at Sacramento City College...was drafted by COL in 2003 as a draft-and-follow...didn't sign with the Rockies until May 30, 2004 after going 5-0 with a 3.26 ERA for SCC in the spring of 2004...is active participant for the Nationals' Community Relations outreach, with special emphasis on kids baseball clinics and visiting area military hospitals.

2013

Posted a 6.37 ERA in 37 games sandwiched around 58-game DL stint...sustained self-inflicted right hand injury on May 19 at SDP...induced ground balls at highest rate of career (77%) in '13, but suffered from abnormally high BABIP (.398)...was touched for only one long ball (Giancarlo Stanton, solo shot, Aug. 28 in DC) in 35.1 innings...enjoyed highest strikeout rate of career (5.60/9.0) in '13...struggled with RISP (16-for-47, .340)...21 of 37 appearances came against NL East rivals...posted .279 batting average against in 9 April appearances (.415 thereafter)...when pitching, Washington went 15-22...6 holds ranked 4th among Nationals behind only Tyler Clippard (33), Drew Storen (24) and Craig Stammen (7).
