William Jared Hughes...Wife's name is Kelly...Was born in Stamford, CT, but family moved to California in 1987...Grew up in San Marino, CA, before moving to Orange County in 1999...Is a 2003 graduate of Santa Margarita High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA...Was originally selected in the 16th round of the 2003 draft by Tampa Bay...Pitched one year (2004) at Santa Clara University...Went 16-7 in his two seasons (2005-06) at Long Beach State University, where he was a teammate of Evan Longoria and Troy Tulowitzki...Went 8-4 with a 3.67 ERA in 16 starts in 2006 and was an honorable mention All-Big West player...Was a Second-Team All-Big West selection in 2005...Was one of three Long Beach State players selected on the first day of the '06 draft (Longoria in the first round and Andrew Carpenter by Philadelphia in the second round)...Was named a second-team summer All-American by Baseball America following a perfect 7-0 record and a 1.62 ERA in the Cape Cod League in 2005...Signed by Pirates scout Brad Cameron.
