Joshua Brent Geer...graduated from Forney (TX) High School where he played baseball and football...attended Rice University in 2004-05 after transferring from Navarro Junior College (TX)...while at Navarro, voted conference MVP after posting a 1.78 ERA in 2003...signed by Padres scout Bob Laurie. 2008 Held left-handed batters to a .146 mark (7-for-48)...Tossed at least 5.0 frames and yielded two runs or less in each of his Big League outings...Contract purchased from Triple-A Portland on 8/29...earned the win in his Major League debut on 8/30 vs. COL, tossing 5.0 innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts in a 9-4 San Diego victory... also collected first career RBI on a walk in Padres six-run fourth inning and later scored first run...Suffered first Big League loss 9/17 at COL despite throwing 5.0 innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts, as San Diego fell 1-0...notched first Major League hit at the plate...Left his last start on 9/26 vs. PIT after 5.0 innings of one-run ball with tightness in his right elbow...With Portland, went 8-9 with a 4.54 ERA (84 ER/166.2 IP), 107 strikeouts and 45 walks in 28 appearances (27 starts)...Led the Pacific Coast League in innings pitched while tied for third in starts...His starts also tied for the team lead (Cesar Ramos)...tied for the most starts in one season by a Portland pitcher since the team returned to the PCL in 2001 (also Junior Herndon, 2001 and Dennis Tankersley, 2003)...Worked 6.0 innings or more in 21 of his 27 starts and allowed three earned runs or fewer in 20 starting assignments...Became the eighth different Opening Day starter for the Beavers since their return to the PCL with a win 4/3 vs. Fresno, limiting the Grizzlies to one home run and one walk while striking out four in 7.0 innings.
