Pirates' breakout star Harrison among finalists for NL Outstanding Player

Clayton Kershaw, Giancarlo Stanton also nominated for Players Choice Award

Breakout sensation Josh Harrison joins established stars Clayton Kershaw and Giancarlo Stanton as finalists for the 2014 Players Choice Award as the National League Outstanding Player.

After batting .250 with three home runs in 60 games in 2013, Harrison earned a roster spot out of Spring Training and became a catalyst for the Pirates.

Harrison went on to hit .315/.347/.490, finishing second to Justin Morneau for the NL batting title and helping lead the Bucs to their second playoff berth in as many seasons. He hit 13 home runs and stole 18 bases.

In contrast, entering the season, a lot of people would have told you Kershaw and Stanton were among baseball's best players. Neither showed any signs of slowing down in 2014.

Kershaw, who signed a new contract before the 2014 season, went on the disabled list and missed a few starts to injury after returning from the season opener in Australia, but he returned to the rotation as good as ever. He still nearly reached 200 innings and earned his fourth straight ERA crown. He won 21 of his 27 starts and led the Dodgers to the NL West title.

Stanton has been one of the game's elite sluggers for some time now. Since making his big league debut in 2010, only Miguel Cabrera and Jose Bautista have hit more home runs.

In 2014, Stanton matched his 2012 high mark with 37 home runs while also hitting .288 and recording a career-best 105 RBIs. He was on his way to more career highs until his season was cut short when he was struck in the face by pitch on Sept. 11.

Stanton suffered a number of facial fractures, but he fortunately avoided major damage and is expected to be ready to go again in 2015.

The winner of the NL Outstanding Player award will be unveiled on Monday, Nov. 3, when the Players Choice Awards show is televised at 8 p.m. ET on MLB Network.
