Will American League's Outstanding Player be of old guard or new?

Mike Trout, Jose Altuve, Victor Martinez nominated for Players Choice Award

Mike Trout and Jose Altuve are two of the game's brightest young talents. Victor Martinez is an established veteran coming off the best year of his career. Which do the players in the American League think was most outstanding in 2014?

Trout spent the first two years of his career establishing himself as one of the game's top players. He won the Players Choice Award as the AL's Outstanding Rookie in 2012 and repeated the performance with an equally outstanding season in 2013.

In 2014, Trout further established his superstar status by hitting .287 and leading the league in both runs and RBIs. His 36 home runs tied him with Jose Abreu for third in the league, and he also made his third All-Star appearance in three years.

After deferring to Miguel Cabrera in 2012 and 2013, Trout is hoping 2014 will be the year he wins his first Players Choice Award as the AL's Outstanding Player.

Altuve is also one of the game's up-and-coming stars. Leading the Astros' youth movement, he batted .285 with 68 stolen bases and 12 home runs over his first two full seasons. He made an All-Star Game appearance in 2012.

In 2014, Altuve took his game to a new level. He won the first batting title in Astros history by hitting .341, and his 56 stolen bases and 225 hits led the AL as well.

While Trout and Altuve may represent the next generation of AL talent, Martinez has been putting up numbers for more than a decade. Earlier in his career, Martinez was one of the best hitting catchers in the game. Through 2013, he went to six All-Star games and had batted over .300 in seven straight seasons.

Despite all of his past success, 2014 may go down as Martinez's crowning achievement. He set career bests with a .335 batting average, .409 OBP, .565 slugging percentage and 32 home runs. He led the league in OBP and finished second in both batting average and slugging and eighth in home runs.

The winner of the Outstanding Player award will be unveiled on Monday, Nov. 3, when the Players Choice Awards show is televised at 8 p.m. ET on MLB Network.
