Trio of Phillips, Cozart, Hamilton earns Gold Glove noms

The Reds' defensive strength apparently resides up the middle, considering their three Rawlings Gold Glove Awards finalists announced Thursday.

Second baseman Brandon Phillips, shortstop Zack Cozart and center fielder Billy Hamilton are all National League finalists at their respective positions for the annual award, which is given each year for defensive excellence. Nominations are based on 75 percent voting by NL coaches and managers and 25 percent on defensive metrics.

Cozart is up against the Marlins' Adeiny Hechavarria and the Braves' Andrelton Simmons; Hamilton is competing against the Mets' Juan Lagares and the Nationals' Denard Span; and Phillips' competition is Philadelphia's Chase Utley and Colorado's DJ LeMahieu.

Hamilton's outstanding catch

Phillips won the award in 2008, '10, '11 and '13. One more win would tie the franchise's record holder at second base. Hall of Famer Joe Morgan won five straight Gold Gloves for Cincinnati from 1973-77.

The winners will be announced live on Nov. 4 during ESPN2's announcement show at 7 p.m. ET.
