Gold Glove Awards finalists revealed

Gold Glove Awards finalists revealed

The American League-champion Royals pointed all season to their airtight defense as a primary element in their success, and the Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists disclosed on Thursday affirmed that view.

First baseman Eric Hosmer, shortstop Alcides Escobar, left fielder Alex Gordon and catcher Salvador Perez were among the three finalists at their positions, and the four represent the most finalists of any team in the AL. Hosmer, Gordon and Perez are defending Gold Glove winners.

The National League-champion Giants, back home in San Francisco for Friday night's Game 3 of the World Series (FOX, 7:30 ET air time/8:07 game time), tied with the Royals at one game apiece, have one Gold Glove nominee: third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

The NL West-champion Dodgers, eliminated by the Cardinals in the Division Series, led the league with four nominees: first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, third baseman Juan Uribe and pitchers Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw.

Major League managers and coaches, voting only within their league and unable to vote for players on their own teams, account for 75 percent of the selection process. The other 25 percent goes to the sabermetrics community.

The winners will be revealed Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

In the AL, Perez, Hosmer, Gordon, Dustin Pedroia (Red Sox), J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones (Orioles) are defending Gold Glove winners. Pitcher R.A. Dickey of the Blue Jays, third baseman Manny Machado of the Orioles and right fielder Shane Victorino of the Red Sox are defending Gold Glovers who were not named finalists this season.

Yadier Molina, Adam Wainwright, Nolan Arenado (Rockies), Brandon Phillips (Reds), Andrelton Simmons (Braves) and Gerardo Parra (Brewers) are defending winners in the NL. Not making the nominees list were 2013 Gold Glovers Paul Goldschmidt (D-backs) at first base, left fielder Carlos Gonzalez (Rockies) and center fielder Carlos Gomez (Brewers).

The Tigers (Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler and Alex Avila), Mariners (Robinson Cano, Kyle Seager and Felix Hernandez), Orioles (Hardy, Jones and Nick Markakis) and Red Sox (Pedroia, Yoenis Cespedes and Jackie Bradley Jr.) boast three finalists in the AL. Among NL teams, the Braves (Simmons, Justin Upton and Jason Heyward), Marlins (Adeiny Hechavarria, Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton), Reds (Phillips, Zack Cozart and Billy Hamilton) and Rockies (Arenado, Justin Morneau and DJ LeMahieu) each had three finalists.

Molina is the leader among this season's finalists with six Gold Gloves, fourth in history among catchers behind Ivan Rodriguez (13), Johnny Bench (10) and Bob Boone (seven).
