Bochy selects Peavy for Game 2, mum on rest of rotation

ST. LOUIS -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy named right-hander Jake Peavy the starter for Sunday's Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, but declined to go beyond that on Friday.

By contrast, the Cardinals have announced their starters for the series' first four games. Scheduled to follow Game 1 starter Adam Wainwright are, in order, Lance Lynn, John Lackey and Shelby Miller.

Logic dictates that the Giants will use Tim Hudson in Game 3 next Tuesday at AT&T Park and Ryan Vogelsong in Wednesday's Game 4 -- unless the club's braintrust believes that starting Bumgarner in Game 4 on three days' rest, one fewer than usual, is absolutely necessary. Typically, Bochy keeps starters on their regular routines.

"Right now we're going to leave it at these two," Bochy said, referring to Bumgarner and Peavy, "but you can pretty much speculate what it's going to be."

The absence of a specific announcement might prompt some observers to wonder whether Tim Lincecum might receive a surprise start.

"It would be nice," said Lincecum, who hasn't pitched yet in this postseason. "You never know. It's hard. I'm just trying to stay ready for any spot they're going to need me."

But Lincecum last started on Aug. 23 and has made six relief appearances since. He probably would start only in an emergency situation.

"Timmy is a swing guy," Bochy reiterated. "We'll use him in long relief, possibly middle relief, [to] get a big out or [pitch] an inning."
