Former Padres ace, Nats righty set to clash in Division Series opener

Friends Peavy, Strasburg share San Diego roots

WASHINGTON -- When they oppose each other in Friday's National League Division Series opener (noon PT on FOX Sports 1), Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals and Jake Peavy of the Giants are too competitive to leave each other little notes underneath the rosin bag by the pitcher's mound. But it's possible to imagine them doing so.

Strasburg grew up in San Diego as a Peavy admirer when the latter was the Padres' ace. They inevitably met over the years and developed a bond that extends beyond their shared status as accomplished right-handed pitchers. Peavy said Thursday that they occasionally converse and exchange text messages.

"Yeah, I've met him a few times," Strasburg said of Peavy. "He's a great guy, a great competitor. And obviously, growing up in San Diego, I got a chance to see him do some special things for the Padres."

Said Peavy, "Stephen is a friend. I had a chance to work out with Stephen in the offseason. He bought a house not far from where I lived in San Diego -- same community, actually. I am a Stephen Strasburg fan. You can't help but be one, when there is a kid that is taking over the community at San Diego State."

Peavy added, "I will be trying to beat him with everything I've got. He will be doing the same. He is a great competitor."
