Royals' Wild, heart-stopping rallies force extras

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals rattled off furious rallies in the eighth and ninth innings against the A's bullpen to send Tuesday night's American League Wild Card Game into extra innings.

Trailing, 7-3, Kansas City scored three runs in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to one, then delivered the tying run in the next frame off Oakland closer Sean Doolittle.

Speed and patience were the keys in the two innings. The Royals set a postseason record by swiping four bags in the eighth, then, Jarrod Dyson stole third base to set up Nori Aoki's game-tying sacrifice fly in the ninth. Walks by Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon were pivotal in the three-run eighth.

Lorenzo Cain and Billy Butler provided run-scoring hits, as well.
