Showalter's love for sports has roots at home

Guided by father, O's manager hit Mississippi State-record .459 as first baseman

Showalter's love for sports has roots at home

Buck Showalter, manager, Orioles
Hometown: DeFuniak Springs, Fla.

Showalter was born in DeFuniak Springs and raised about 75 miles west in Century, Fla. His father, a former Little All-American at Milligan College in Tennessee, was the principal at Century High School and helped Buck learn about sports -- football and baseball in particular.

Because of his size, Showalter knew his future had to come in baseball -- although he's still an avid college football fan -- and he earned a scholarship to play at Mississippi State University in Starkville.

The O's manager batted .459 as a first baseman at Mississippi State, which still stands as a Bulldog record.
