Votto taking BP, but return this weekend unlikely

CINCINNATI -- The Reds have still not officially ruled out injured first baseman Joey Votto from returning this season. But it seemed highly unlikely on Friday.

"I haven't talked to him in a couple of days, but I'm not sure it makes any sense," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said.

On the 60-day disabled list, Votto has not played since July 5 after he suffered a distal strain of his left quadriceps for the second time this season.

Votto has taken batting practice and infield work without setbacks for over a week.

Jocketty was optimistic that Votto would return to 100 percent by next season.

"We're meeting on Monday, but everything I know leading up to this is yes," Jocketty said. "Everybody that has had issues this year will have procedures done after the season and will be ready by Spring Training."
