Jay takes personal leave, expected back Friday

CHICAGO -- The Cardinals were without Jon Jay for Wednesday's series finale against the Cubs at Wrigley Field after the center fielder needed to leave town in order to attend to a personal matter. Manager Mike Matheny said the club had some advance warning about the departure and that Jay is expected back with the club before Friday's series opener in Arizona.

With Jay out of the mix, Peter Bourjos made his first start since Sept. 17. Oscar Taveras was the team's right fielder du jour.

While Jay has thrived as the team's two-hole hitter for most of the month, Wednesday's matchup against Cubs starter Jake Arrieta was not one that would have favored him anyway. Jay is hitless in six at-bats against the right-hander. Bourjos (1-for-5) and Taveras (0-for-3) have not had much success either.

Taking Jay out of the lineup, however, left the Cardinals without a player who has hit safely in 17 of his last 24 starts and has seven multihit games this month.
