Cruz sixth in O's history with 40-homer season

'Most Valuable Oriole' trails only Robinson for most in first season with club

Cruz sixth in O's history with 40-homer season

NEW YORK -- Orioles designated hitter Nelson Cruz continued his fabulous season with his 40th home run in the fifth inning of Tuesday's game against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Cruz, who was named the Most Valuable Oriole on the team's recently wrapped homestand, took New York starter Brandon McCarthy deep to become just the sixth player in franchise history to hit the 40-homer mark in a season. Cruz joins Chris Davis, Brady Anderson, Jim Gentile, Frank Robinson and Rafael Palmeiro.

Cruz also raised his RBI total to 107, another career high. Signed to a one-year deal this spring, Cruz trails only Robinson (49) for the most homers in his first season with Baltimore.
