After spending a few years of his childhood in Paris, Russell Martin graduated from Polyvalente Édouard-Montpetit High School in Montreal.

Martin was chosen to represent his country in the 2000 World Junior Baseball Championships, and again in 2004, playing for Canada's qualifying team for the Olympics. He played baseball in the United States as a third baseman for Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Fla.

Martin was scheduled to play Division-I college baseball for North Carolina State University, but he turned pro after the Dodgers selected him in the 17th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
