Marte day to day after getting plunked on elbow

PITTSBURGH -- Starling Marte left Thursday's game against the Phillies after getting hit with a pitch on his left elbow.

Marte had his left elbow wrapped in ice in the Pirates clubhouse following the win. He was hit in the second inning by an inside breaking pitch from A.J. Burnett and appeared to be in some pain as he walked to first.

Marte took early batting practice before Friday's opener vs. the Cubs to test whether he could swing the bat. It obviously did not go too well, as he was out of the starting lineup.

Marte has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball since coming off the 7-day concussion disabled list on Aug. 5. In 34 games since then, he is hitting .362/.426/.598 with 17 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs.
