DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera and his injured right ankle returned to first base Friday night after one day completely off and four games in Cleveland as the designated hitter. However, Cabrera appears likely to split time with Victor Martinez at first base from here on out.
The issue involves more than Cabrera, whose ankle has severely limited his mobility and seemingly limited his power for the past several weeks. It also involves Martinez, whom manager Brad Ausmus does not want to wear down at first base for a lengthy stretch.
"It'll be a balancing act with Miggy's ankle and Victor over there at first," Ausmus said Friday afternoon.
It'll also most likely be a day-to-day decision.
Martinez missed just over a week before the All-Star break with back and side issues, and the Tigers have been cautious not to do anything to risk another injury to that area.
