• The Cardinals had high hopes for first baseman Matt Adams this year after he played in 108 games last season. The 25-year old has done more than just succeed, he's excelled. Adams entered Friday hitting .309 with 12 home runs and 55 RBIs.

"He's just been very consistent all year," Matheny said. "I don't think he's even close to his ceiling yet."

• Jon Jay entered Friday night's series opener with a 12-game hit streak. During the streak, he hit .514 (18-for-35) with two home runs.

• The Cardinals' offense has been on a tear since Aug. 13, entering Friday's action hitting .296 and having scored the second-most runs in the National League with 43 over the previous seven games.
