• Hunter Pence was given the Heart and Hustle Award prior to Friday night's game. The award is given annually to honor players who demonstrate passion for the game and best embody baseball's values, spirit and tradition. Pence was this year's Giants recipient.
"That's a no-brainer," Bochy said when asked about Pence winning the award. "Whether it's defense, swinging the bat, running the bases, routine two-hopper, you just enjoy and appreciate the effort he gives day in and day out.
"I don't see how this would've gone to anybody else. He takes it up another notch every day."
• Back spasms forced Hector Sanchez, on a rehab assignment following a concussion, to leave Triple-A Fresno's game early Thursday night. Bochy anticipated he'd be fine to catch Friday night.
