• Farrell spoke to the Cumberland, R.I., Little League team on Friday, hours before they played their first game in the Little League World Series.
"From what I understand, each year the New England representative ends up having a conversation with the guy in my seat," said Farrell. "It's happened for a number of years. I remember [former Red Sox manager Terry Francona] having the same conversations as well. Today, they were energetic, great questions, and they're really pumped up about playing tonight."
• A followup that Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino had following back surgery revealed no red flags, and he should be able to make a standard recovery, which would have him back in plenty of time for Spring Training.
"You know, he's following a pretty standard protocol right now," Farrell said. "And that's just gradual activity of walking, no real functional movements of any kind yet. The followup checkup did not have anything alarming. Like we said, he's following the normal protocol."
